The District was ablaze with the who’s who of Black politics and opinion last weekend as the Congressional Black Caucus made its imprint on the city. As someone unfamiliar with the Washington culture but anxious to get to know it better, I was extremely excited to represent theFreshXpress at the premier event for young Black movers and shakers looking to network over great food. That’s right, this weekend was The Inaugural Hip Hop Brunch for the Congressional Black Caucus and it was an event to behold. Michael McQuerry, Rob DJ Blaze, and Kelechi Kalu were the hosts of the Brunch and I tip my hat off to those gentlemen. In the time that I spent with them I gathered that I was in the presence of the who’s who of Washington D.C. and I knew that despite the weather being on the decline, this event was sure to be a hit. theFreshXpress had the extreme pleasure of providing the social media coverage of the event and the hosts were most gracious to myself, my partner in crime Apuje, and Fung’ke Blak Chik.

The restaurant Tabaq was beautiful! Located right on U St. it was a perfect fit for the event. Classy, sexy, with plenty of space. I was quite impressed. The decor was modern with splashes of red and there was a retractable rooftop dining area with an amazing view of D.C. When I asked the hostess if all of the areas would be open for our events she commented they would go up each of the floors if necessary as people arrived. I simply told her, “I’m positive it will be necessary.” The music was perfect. While it was the fusion of Hip Hop, good food and the political climate in the city the music started off smooth and cranked it up as the afternoon played out. Everyone was  really feeling the vibe and music really contributed to the high energy in the building. Kudos to DJ Blaze.

The event kicked off at 12 p.m. and those that had made reservations were in the building by 11:50 a.m. At this point, Apuje Kalu the gentleman doing FXP interviews with me decided that this would be the best time to get brunch for ourselves.

Take a look!

The food was exquisite! I, being the me that I am, had the open-faced fried Chicken and Waffles. To die for! The chicken was golden, flaky, moist, and PERFECT! The waffle was sweet, fluffy, and a “small piece of waffle heaven” as I exclaimed after taking a bite. Apuje had the Shrimp and Crabmeat Omelette with a side of lamb sausages. Can I just say that lamb in sausage form may just be the next best thing to honey on Popeyes biscuits? Indeed. Add a mimosa to the mix and our meal only racked up at $31. That kind of good food at that great a price was the perfect touch to a perfect event. The food was so good that they actually ran out of Chicken and Waffles! I’m glad I got mine early, and I’m sure DJ Blaze was glad that I was benevolent enough to share! My eyes were bigger than my stomach.

After eating our delightful meal we were introduced to several of D.C.’s “people to know.” One of which was Mr. Jarvis Houston of the Young & Powerful Group. It was sincerely a pleasure to meet him and while we had an interview all lined up with him, his popularity out-paced us and he was swept into the mix. Congresswoman Laura Richardson of California and friends also made a well received stop at the brunch. Broccoli City was in attendance showcasing their line of organic hip hop clothing and to say that you missed out if you were not there would be an understatement.

We interviewed over ten of the attendees to the brunch asking questions concerning the energy of the CBC, how they felt President Obama was doing in office so far, and the role of Hip Hop in politics today. Each of our guests did an amazing job sharing with us and we were pleased to see so many of our people together and supporting one another. Asking everyone that we could if they were enjoying themselves and if they would RSVP next year they replied with a resounding “Yes!”

While 4 p.m. was the end time for the event I would say that the crowd was still strong as things wound down. As we wrapped up our interviews everyone was making sure that the last business card was passed out and every hand was shaken. I sat down with the three hosts of the afternoon, while they sipped their drinks to relax, to catch their opinions on how things went.

Here is Apuje with 2 out of the 3 hosts, DJ Blaze and Michael McQuerry. I could tell the gentlemen were tired as it had been quite a day. Up and down four flights over and over again did a number on my high-heeled feet so I know that they were beat. I was thankful that they took the time to speak with me and I was pleased with what they had to say.

Curious to what they had to say as well as the others? Well you’ll have to keep checking The FreshXpress. As soon as we get done editing, we’ll post the footage of the event as well as the interviews! So that means you’ll have to keep visiting! While you are there, check out the other great articles we have! You’ll be sure to get hooked!

Ciao!
